Almaden Lake Park

Public Transportation
During the summer months the park can become very congested and parking is limited. Park access may be restricted during peak use periods and it is recommended that visitors car-pool and come to the park early, as the park and parking may fill quickly.Almaden Lake Park is easy to reach by Santa Clara County Transportation Agency light rail or bus. Located in south San Jose, Almaden Lake Park is the only park featuring a sand beach and swim area in the South Bay. Many visitors come to relax and enjoy the recreational opportunities to fish along the shores of the 32 acres of lake, hike and bike in our beautiful 65 acre facility.

Others enjoy a nice family or company picnic and play volleyball, toss horseshoes and Bocce ball courts are available on a first come first serve basis, you will need to provide your own equipment. Court etiquette is expected.

Almaden Lake Park is divided into two sides referred to as the Eastside, which runs parallel to Winfield Boulevard and the Westside of the park along Almaden Expressway. Dogs are not allowed on the Westside of the park as it is considered a wildlife sanctuary and the swim beach area must remain clean.

Dogs are welcome on the eastside of the park and must remain on a leash and under control at all times. Owners are responsible for removing any excretement and disposing in a waste receptacle.

A concession stand is open on a seasonal basis, and offers beverages, light foods, refreshments and rentals of pedal boats and life jackets. Tthere are large green open lawns and picnic areas with barbecue pits. Tot lots are located at both sides of the park and feature water play area.

Connected to the south end of Almaden Lake Park is the Los Alamitos Creek Trail, which continues to Santa Teresa County Park. This 3.9-mile trail features a fitness course and takes you by scenic agricultural lands and riparian communities. Connected to the north end of the park is the Guadalupe River Park trail which travels below street level for a smooth .9 mile stretch to the percolation pond located under Highway 85.


 
Boating Restricted

Water Activities


Almaden Lake Park is San José's only park featuring an extensive sand beach and swim area, supervised by lifeguards. Visitors can enjoy a range of other water activities including fishing, boating (no power boats), windsurfing and paddle boating. Swimming may start as early as Memorial Day weekend and continue through Labor Day weekend. The swim area is open Wednesday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday.


 
Swimming Information
 

Beginning in the summer of 2009, there will be a nominal fee for swimming. Swim wrist bands will be available for purchase at the concession stand. Swimming is allowed only at the swim beach when lifeguards are on duty. A parking fee is charged when the parking booth is attended. Large inflatable toys may be restricted by the Lifeguards and inflatable arm floats are prohibited. All children must be attended by an adult when in or near the water. Diapers should not be worn by children to maintain water quality. Water quality is tested on a regular basis. The beach may be closed at any time for your safety. Fresh water showers are available for your use at the beach. A limited number of child-sized coast guard approved Personal Floatation Vests may be available for an additional fee.

Wearing a wetsuit is required and please sign in with the Lifeguard before entering the water. A nominal fee will be charged. If interested in other days for open water swim, please call 408-277-5130.


Picnic Areas

Picnic tables with barbecue pits are located throughout the park, with most sites available on a first come, first serve basis. (One adult may save one table.) Five sites are available for reservation for a nominal fee. Picnic information

Rules and Regulations

1. Park is open to the public at 7:00 a.m. until one-half hour after sunset.

2. Swimming and wading are allowed only in designated areas and only when lifeguards are on duty.

3. Children under the age of eight (8) years of age are not allowed along any shoreline unless accompanied by a person sixteen (16) years of age or older.

4. No intoxicating beverages of any kind are allowed in any parking area or within 30 feet of any parking area, in the swim area, or in any park play appartus area or tot lot.Beer, malt liquor, sake wine or champagne is allowed in picnic areas only.

5. Glass containers are prohibited within 30 feet of any shoreline, on the beach or in the swim area.

6. Unauthorized persons are not allowed on the Almaden Lake Island.

7. Dogs must be and under control and on a leash are allowed on the east side of the park only.

8. Skating is allowed only on paved sidewalks and pathways. No skating is allowed on steps or stages.

9. Operation of any loudspeaker or sound amplifier is prohibited without a permit.

10. Only outdoor cooking fires are permitted and must be in a stove, fireplace, barbecue pit or camp stove used safely in designated picnic or cooking areas.

11. Powered model airplanes, boats, cars or rockets are not allowed.

12. No intoxicating beverage, except beer, malt liquor, sake, wine or champagne, is allowed in any area of the park.

13. Guns and dangerous instruments are not allowed in the park.

14. No person shall pick, saw, chop, carve, cut, remove, damage or gather any flowers, bark, branches, twigs, leaves or blossoms of any tree, plant or other vegetation in any area of the park.

15. Fish may be caught and released - but should not be eaten. This lake contains fish and sediment that may be contaminated with mercury, which is harful if ingested by humans. Fishing licences must be displayed at all times.

15. All other San Jose Municipal Code and State laws shall apply to this park.
