  Volunteering

 Get involved and have fun!

San José staff conduct regular visits to pick up litter and monitor graffiti along trails. But we can always use a helping hand. On this page, you'll City of San José, Santa Clara Valley Water District and Friends of the Guadalupe River Parks & Gardens programs that you can join to offer your support.

Volunteering to help keep your trails clean (and the creeks alongside them) is a fun way to get out in nature. You will be sharing the joy of helping your community alongside other dedicated people just like you.

One-Day Service Events
Children cleanu up Guadalupe River

Many citizens enjoy volunteering yet do not have time to make a weekly or monthly commitment.  The One Day Service Events provide an opportunity for people who would like to volunteer to help out in the parks on a short-term basis. Generally, One Day Events are 3-4 hours in length, on one day, which allows volunteers to complete a project in a very short amount of time.  Scheduled clean-up projects can be completed by individuals or groups. Corporations, church groups, service organizations and neighborhood associations can set up individual events or can work as part of a large task. Many volunteers working together can make a huge impact in the appearance and safety of our parks!

Trail Count occurs annually in September. Trail users are counted and surveyed along popular trail systems.  Coordination of the event occurs as the result of a partnership between the City of San José , Friends of the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. Trail Count data supports grant writing efforts and encouraging bicycling as a important element of the overall transportation system.

Contact us if you are interested in participating in the upcoming Trail Count.

Atopt-a-Trail

The Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Trail programs provide ongoing volunteer support to parks and trails.  These citywide programs train volunteers to assist in the general care and maintenance of public parks and trails. Program participants make a one-year commitment to adopt a park.  After attending training, volunteers are equipped with all the necessary tools to help in the parks: gloves, litter pick-up sticks, trash bags and other tools are provided as needed. An Adopt-a-Park/Trail t-shirt is also supplied in order to help identify our volunteers in the field.

Once trained, volunteers help out on their own time and are simply required to work 2 hours per month. Many volunteers enjoy their time in the parks so much that they often put in many more hours per month.  All volunteers are required to report their hours monthly. Staff contact information is provided so that volunteers and city staff can work together for the betterment of each individual park.

The Adopt a Park/Trail programs have been very successful and currently have over 1,000 registered volunteers.  Please join us in making city parks safe and clean for all our residents!
