Picnic Areas

Alum Rock Park is located at the end of Penitencia Creek Road in the east San José foothills. This 744-acre rustic park offers a variety of activities that include hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, volleyball and horseshoes. Parking is $6.00 per vehicle.

There are eight (8) reservable group picnic areas that can accommodate from 30 to 300 people as well as non-reservable picnic sites that are available first-come, first-serve. Alcoholic beverages are allowed in picnic areas only and are limited to beer and wine.

Air jumpers are not allowed in this park.

For Groups up to 30 people:

The Ramada Picnic Area is located next to the playground and Visitor Center. It is a fully-covered area with three tables and two small barbecues.

Reservations for this area must be made in person at Leininger Center located in Kelley Park at 1300 Senter Road. Office hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

For Groups up to 35 people:

Buckeye Lane Picnic Area is directly adjacent to the creek and therefore is not recommended for groups with small children. It has seven tables and three small barbecues.

Live Oak Picnic Area overlooks the creek at the east end of the park. This site has five tables and two medium-size barbecues in addition to restroom facilities and running water.

Reservations for either of these areas must be made in person at Leininger Center located in Kelley Park at 1300 Senter Road. Office hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

For Groups up to 55 people:

The Big Bear Picnic Area is located behind the Youth Science Institute. Because of its proximity to the creek, it is not recommended for groups with small children. The site has running water, six tables and four small-size barbecues.

Reservations for this area must be made in person at Leininger Center located in Kelley Park at 1300 Senter Road. Office hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

The Sycamore Picnic Area is a large, secluded area that has running water available at the site. The picnic area has six double tables and three medium-size barbecues.

Reservations for this area must be made in person at Leininger Center located in Kelley Park at 1300 Senter Road. Office hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

For Groups up to 100 people:

The Chaparral Picnic Area is adjacent to the Visitor Center and the playground. This area is ideal for groups with small children. It has ten tables, two large barbecues, a food prep area and a sink with faucet..

Reservations for this area must be made in person at Leininger Center located in Kelley Park at 1300 Senter Road. Office hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

The Log Cabin Picnic Area is located near a volleyball court, horseshoe pits and playground. It has ten large and five small tables, two large and eight small barbecues plus a large food prep area with sink and faucet.

The Rustic Lands Picnic Area is located in a large, secluded area near where Penitencia Creek Road and Alum Rock Road intersect. The area has 26 tables, two large and ten small barbecues, two serving tables and two water faucets.
