Description: The Bay Trail is a planned regional trail that, when complete, will encircle San Francisco and San Pablo Bays with a continuous 400-mile network of bicycling and hiking trails. It will connect the shoreline of all nine Bay Area counties, link 47 cities, and cross the major toll bridges in the region. For more information about the San Francisco Bay Trail, visit the San Francisco Bay Trail web site or read this article from Bay Nature magazine. San Jose's portion of the Bay Trail is not yet developed, but you can already enjoy nearby levee trails and the historical Alviso community - read this article from the San Jose Mercury News.
San Jose's Bay Trail master plan was adopted by the City Council in 2002. Once built, the San José portion of the trail will be approximately 13 miles in length and follow the shore some roadways in Alviso. Although the trail isn't open, you might enjoy visiting Alviso and the USFWS Interpretive Center located near Spreckles Avenue. Also in the area, consider visiting Sunnyvale's Bay Land Park located to the north or using the Highway 237 Bikeway for commuting. The County portions of the Bay Trail are open - for a more information: Click Here.
Status: Development of the Bay Trail within San Jose is underway. See links below for a feasibilty study and geotechnical study that were prepared for future development of a pedestrian bridge to span the Alviso Slough (Lower Guadalupe River).
Technical Advisory Committee: The City has formed a committee of technical experts including representatives from permitting agencies and city departments. The committee is guiding the preparation of construction documents. Documents provided to the committee are posted below.
