After more than six months of construction, the Lower Guadalupe River Trail is open for use.
The enlarged and improved trail opened on December 31 and is fully accessible from Gold Street to Highway 880. The Lower Guadalupe River Trail adds 6.4 miles to the existing 2.6 miles that wind along the river near downtown San Jose.
This addition connects the paved trails and provides users with new routes. At Airport Parkway, new paved under-crossings and surface improvements allow trail users to access the gravel trails along the riverbanks.
Through the partnership of the City of San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley Water District, trail improvements were delivered in a timely and effective manner. Eventually, these trails will be connected to others in Santa Clara County, allowing residents to enjoy our trails from anywhere in the area.
At the end of 2007, the City of San Jose also received a federal grant to expand the trails. The upcoming expansion, which likely will occur within two years, will include the construction of a paved trail between Montague Expressway and Highway 880.
As a runner and cyclist, I appreciate the addition of paved trails and the connection these new trails offer to users. More paved trails allow for more diverse exercise opportunities, such as jogging with a stroller or rollerblading.
To celebrate the opening of this new length of trail, I invite you to join me and representatives from the City of San Jose and Santa Clara County for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the trail entrance at Airport Parkway and Airport Boulevard.
